This American Literature course is a year-long course designed to prepare students for beginning-college level writing.  This class will help to develop skills as an independent reader and writer through assessing a variety of genres on three levels: understanding, interpreting and analyzing.  Students taking this class will write and revise certain pieces into polished final drafts, including college application essays, response papers and a research paper.  Throughout the year, they will accumulate a final writing portfolio which will have evidence of both the finished work and works in progress.  The reading aspect of this class will have an emphasis on American Literature from the earliest American writers into the 21st century and how American Literature has entered the world literary scene and made an impact.

MS English Bronze will be a blend of grammar, literature and the basics of writing.  Sentence structure, writing application, and vocabulary use is the main focus of our grammar study.  Much of this is based upon the reading that is done and breaking down what makes writing effective through grammar.  We will spend time working on creating a strong foundation in grammar as well as incorporating those skills into their actual writing.  Short stories, nonfiction, & fiction, poetry, drama and novels are all utilized throughout the school year.  A wide array of materials are used, giving students an understanding of the world and presenting opportunities to balance what literature has to offer with what the Word of God says.  Response papers, research assignments, projects, creative writing, and daily assignments are used throughout the year to enhance the teaching tools available for instruction.  These different venues will help to enable students with a variety of giftings to be able to both learn from different teaching techniques and be able to utilize their own talents to express themselves.  It is also my goal to have the students revise their work multiple times to improve the quality of their work and to identify weaknesses and mistakes within their writings.
